It’s not a bad report for Microsoft at all; in the first quarter of 2014 around 1.2 million Xbox One consoles have been sold. That’s left Microsoft with reported profits of $5.66 billion from the first three months of the year. Not a bad day at the office! Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella explained that, “This quarter's results demonstrate the strength of our business, as well as the opportunities we see in a mobile-first, cloud-first world.”
Despite the successful sales figures though, the Xbox One is still lagging being the PlayStation 4 in sales. Where Microsoft estimates that five million Xbox One’s have left the shelves of gaming stores around the globe since its release in November, Sony’s figure for the PS4 now tops seven million.
Part of the reason for the Xbox One’s slightly more sluggish sales could be the price tag, though new bundled offers have brought the price of the console down to a slightly more manageable amount. It could also be linked to the reports from developers that reaching a 1080p resolution on the Xbox One is more of a challenge than on the PS4, leading gamers to opt for the console that seems to offer the best performance. In reality however, many new titles are indistinguishable on the two consoles, such as Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs.
